About

Hylke Dijkstra, M.Phil. (Cantab) is a Ph.D. candidate at Maastricht University, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Political Science. He was educated in economics and European studies at Maastricht University before he obtained a research master's degree in Contemporary European Studies at the University of Cambridge. While enrolled in undergraduate studies he furthermore spent short periods at Yale University and at the Corvinus University Budapest. Hylke Dijkstra is the winner of the prize for best article of 2008 in the European Foreign Affairs Review for scholars under the age of thirty-five.

In addition to his academic training, he gained professional experience while working at the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations (NY). In this period, which coincided with the Dutch EU Presidency, he followed and participated in the deliberations of the UN General Assembly's Second Committee. He also worked for the European Commission (DG Enlargement) and dealt with the accession process of Bulgaria, Croatia and Turkey.

His research interests include the CFSP/ESDP, the EU as an international actor, EU enlargement, and mainstream European integration theory and IR thought. He particularly focuses on the role and influence of supranational bureaucracy in the context of the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy.

Hylke Dijkstra teaches several courses throughout the bachelor programme of European Studies.
